5 Good Reasons to Watch Angry Mom

I know I'm a little late to the watching game, but I am so glad that I started watching Angry Mom. I haven't felt to in anticipation for each new episode about a drama in a long while. It might also have to do with the fact that this show manages to get your heart racing enough to count it as a cardio workout, or maybe that's just the cliffhangers. For those of you already watching, feel free to add your own reasons, pictures, squeeing, etc. in the comments below. I that already from Twitter that there is a lot of love for Angry Mom already happening.

1. Kim Hee Sun is killing it in this drama!!! It's like a whole other level of bad-a awesomeness and emotional intensity that has me drawn to watching performance. Not only is she able to pull off a mostly believable stint as an undercover highschooler, but dang, she you can tell why people are drawn to her, and why they are drawn to loving her. She's magnetic. She is also the embodiment of strong motherhood - willing to defend her child to the death, quite literally in this drama. She also has such an amazing chemistry with everyone she interacts with on set and she mothers so many people so well in the story. It's just a treat to watch Kim Hee Sun breathe and live this character. You can just tell that this drama is well cast. She's also been sharing lots of fun pics on Instagram of behind the scenes stuff if you would like to see some more of that great set chemistry.

2. The Mother-Daughter Relationships are also another thing that I adore about this show. Not only do we have the Jo Kang Ja (Kim Hee Sun) and her daugher, Oh Ah Ran (Kim Yoo Jung) to watch, but we also have Kang Ja's friendship with her BFF Han Gong Joo (Go So Hee). Gong Joo has to act as her mother in order for Kang Ja to go successfully undercover and it's lovely to see Gong Joo really step up to the plate and provide the listening ear, support, and love needed to accomplish their goals. Also, she's super funny and a delight to watch.

And it is really lovely to watch the relationship between Kang Ja and Ah Ran grow, blossom, and develop into something richer as Ah Ran starts to realize just how much her mother does love her and how much she is willing to do to protect her. They also just have a really great rapport. And the relationship really does feel like a real mother and daughter. Actually all the relationships have an element to feeling rather real and I really love and appreciate that. And Kim Yoo Jung, is of course, absolutely lovely as Oh Ah Ran. She has just as much courage and mettle as her mother and it is heartwarming to see how fiesty and brave she is in the face of so much adversity. And Kim Yoo Jung is always a pleasure to watch in whatever she's in.

3. Ji Soo. Let's just say that he took me completely by surprise and judging by my Twitter list, everyone else as well. He is pretty much an unknown newcomer to acting, and yet he is stealing the scenes, or at least holding his own in a way that has us lapping it all up. Ji Soo plays Go Bok Dong, a rather nasty piece of work, or at least it seems that way at first. I don't want to give too much of the story away, but I promise you'll love Go Bok Dong by at least episode 10, if not long before.

He is portraying a rather complex character splendidly. He's hateful, yet likable all at once. Gruff and sexy, yet completely vulnerable. He is also able to portray a raw and earnest innocence underneath a very tough image. He's done bad stuff, sure, but he is by no means comfortable with the darkness.

And let's just say that his puppy love crush on Bang Wool (Kang Ja's undercover name) is about the cutest thing out there.

Also, dang, that man is fine. Here is his Instagram if you so feel the need to follow him. If I say much more, my fangirl might go too crazy with how hard I'm crushing on the kid. And yes, he's legal, so I can squee ;)

4. Nuanced and layered characters are another treat in this drama as well as interesting a and compelling storylines. I know that mega-corruption, murder, rape, and bullying are not exactly easy storylines to deal with, but this drama does a good job of handling these themes with emotional honesty and depth. You feel for the characters right from the get go. Whether the characters are bad, good, or somewhere in between, they have depth and layers enough to make them interesting.

What is also great is to see characters change, for either better or for worse. Metamorphosis in a storyline is always interesting and one wants to see compelling and believable character depth and growth for a fulfilling watch. One such example is with Ji Hyun Woo's character, Park No Ah, who is pretty much the epitome of naïveté and someone who has been cushioned from the hard-knock school of life. His character serves as an excellent foil to highlighting the very real and intense struggles of the high schoolers being bullied and terrorized by a corrupt system. Of course, the drama is a hyper-dramatized view of high school in South Korea, but severe bullying and stigma against rape victims is a very real reality. So I am glad that the writer and director aren't shying away from difficult topics. Kim Tae Hoon, Kim Hee Won, and Oh Yoon Na are all giving some really excellent performances as well and it's just making the drama a treat to watch.

5. The cinematography, directing, and editing are also just fabulous. The director and cinematographer use lighting and shadow to great effect, and they also use some wonderful filters that just make me happy. The editing has also been crisp and clean and each scene builds well into the next. The writer, dang, is adept at nail-biting cliffhangers, and there have even been a few episodes where I've been relieved that the cliffhanger wasn't as intense. You know, just to have a break from my blood pressure rising. There have also been some really beautifully cut scenes where very little is said and the lighting, camera, and actors faces tell the story so clearly and beautifully. The use of colour has also been particularly gorgeous and something that is incredibly aesthetically pleasing to the eye and mind. You can tell that serious thought was put into this production.

So there you have it, five-ish excellent reasons to start watching (if you haven't already). It's dark, gritty, heartwarming, funny, and well put together. Enjoy the watch!

And dear dramaverse people, feel free to add your reasons in the comments. Let's convince everyone to watch and fall in love with Go Bok Dong ;)

    1. Thanks for the awesome post. It's extremely sad to see people miss out on this because they think it's dark and depressing. Although it balances it's dark, heartwarming and humorous moments extremely well. After Healer ended, I did not have any thing to look forward to throughout the week. There's Angry mom now, thankfully.
I love the use of light too. When Kang ja piggybacks Ah ran, it is a very bright and lovely scene.
And the relationship between Kang ja and Gong joo - ❤ I love that while she's being a pretend mother, she also acts like one when they're not around other people. ( I won't ask you why or how, like a mother, I'll just help you. - she says this in one of the earlier episodes and this made me cry so much) Gong joo is an amazing friend and a great pretend/real mother. I love that she squishes everyone and mothers them : Jung hee, Bok dong and squeezes others ( the guy at the club 😂) And her Rapunzel themed dresses make me want to buy such dresses too. Haha. I love that there's an even more outrageous dress than the last in every episode.
I was not convinced Kim hee sun could play a high schooler but she's perfect for this role. And she's so pretty. ^^
I pretty much love all the characters in this show, Park Noah, Ah ran and yeah Go Bok dong for all the reasons you've mentioned. ^~^

  3. I agree totally with your article. Thank you for saying every thing I also feel about ANGRY MOM. And Actress Kim is so beautiful. No amount of make-up could possibly make her look as great as she does in all those outdoor, spontaneous photos around the food carts. She seems genuinely a very nice person, as well as being a fine actress.

What award category will AM occupy best? Surely as a candidate for "favorite couple", for one!

PS:.... Another drama this season I thought did a fantastic job focusing on serious issues in high schools was DETECTIVES OF SEONAM GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL. Mixed comedy with a serious treatment of the problems, but I don't think it became as popular as AM. (I loved it).

  4. Thank you for your great comment! Kim Hee Sun really is beautiful and not only that, she's just being so awesome in this drama!

I think that Ji Soo might also get a newcomer award. He is certainly also very popular in South Korea as well. I saw that Angry Mom was also number 1 on the Daum search tonight.

I heard some good things about the drama you mentioned. I'll have to look more into it ^^ Thank you again for commenting!

  8. Sorry about the comment reply delay! I'm glad you liked the post ^^ It is sad to see people deterred by the dark and depressing themes of the drama (though I can understand if people prefer to avoid things like that). I totally agree though that it still brings in those heartwarming and humourous moments so well!

I also love that they choose bright colours with happier scenes, or use a lot of brighter light (like in the piggyback scene you mentioned). And I also love Gong Joo's mothering scenes. She is so great! Her princess persona is hilarious and the costumers do such a great job of showcasing different princesses with her outfits. They make me laugh every time.

And yes, I think that Kim Hee Sun was perfectly cast. She manages to pull off being in a uniform so well.

And I love all those characters as well! Ah! I love this drama so much!!!!
